I?m not an English scholar. I read Percy mainly for the following reasons, as stated in this description of the presentation for WALKER PERCY: THE NOVELIST'S ART at the recent Percy Weekend: ?In all of our discussions of Walker Percy?s philosophical ideas and moral convictions, we sometimes lose sight of his art as a novelist ? We?ll celebrate Percy?s art as a storyteller, a powerfully acute observer, and a dazzling linguistic stylist.? And it is in this spirit that I read and enjoy McCarthy, because he writes passages like this: ?Once there were brook trout in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery.? Karl Terrell Sent from my iPhone On Jun 16, 2023, at 12:26 PM, Michael Martin Serafin wrote: ? Thanks for the link and the research! To answer your question: My favorites include The Moviegoer (and because it won the National Book Award, seems a logical first choice to include in the LoA). I also would choose Love in the Ruins, the first novel I read by Percy which made me a lifelong lover of his fiction, but also because it is so prescient about our society today. But I?d skip The Last Gentleman (which I never liked as much as the others despite the fact it was chosen for the Modern Library publication). For the LoA, I'd include my personal favorite, The Second Coming. I think Percy does his best job of female characterization in that novel, not to mention, it?s more upbeat, an enjoyable read. There?s tons of cool symbolism and allusions in it too. If I got to choose four, I?d add Lancelot as I think it is particularly well-written and tightly plotted. We are having our annual Walker Percy session(s) at this year?s South Atlantic Modern Language Association conference, November 9-11, 2023, in Atlanta, GA. If you have any ideas, thoughts, or insights on Percy that you want to share with the world (or, at least, the Percy world), that you?d like to develop into a 10-double-spaced-page (20-minute) paper presentation, related to conference theme of ?(In)Security? (or NOT, could be related just to Percy in general?doesn?t have to be about the theme), then submit a 300-word abstract by July 28 to kareyperkins at gmail.com. Here?s the official CFP; more info about conference itself as well as the conference theme (again, optional) is available at the conference website: Walker Percy CFP for SAMLA 95 November 9-11, 2023, Atlanta, GA (In)Security: The Future of Literature and Language Studies Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel and Conference Center https://samla.memberclicks.net/ ?Walker Percy and (In)Security? Papers for this traditional session may focus on any aspect of Walker Percy?s life and works, either fiction or non-fiction. Especially welcome are topics relevant to the SAMLA 95 conference theme: (In)Security. Possible topics include but are not limited to: ? How Percy?s apocalyptic novels (Love in the Ruins, The Thanatos Syndrome) and non-fiction (Review of A Canticle for Leibowitz, end of Lost in the Cosmos) reflect our collective future insecurities. ? What Percy?s portrayal of the political divide in America (Leftpapas and Knotheads, black vs. white, social and economic classes in conflict) reveals about today?s divisions that threaten to tear apart our country and democracy. ? How identity is related to insecurity: Psychiatry is a central element of every Percy novel, portraying many anxious psychological patients, insecure in their selves, identities, and roles in society. Consider also that Percy often wrote that individual psychological ills are often produced as a coping mechanism for societal sickness. ? What do Percy?s writings show about how technology and the unfettered pursuit of capitalism might challenge the idea of what it is to be a human being? Consider his use of tech such as lapsometers (seen as a cure for spiritual ills) or Americans? role as primarily consumers in a capitalist world (replacing a well-developed inner life), or other aspects/topics in his fiction and nonfiction. ? What is the future of Percy studies, considering Percy?s status as a regularly taught topic in English departments today seems precarious as well. Do alterations to the literary canon and challenges to academic freedom threaten the place of a Percy scholar in academia today? Please send 300-word abstracts on these topics or ANY aspect of Percy?s fiction or non-fiction (not just limited to conference theme of ?(In)Security?) by July 28, 2023, to Dr. Karey Perkins, South Carolina State University, to both kperkin1 at scsu.edu and kareyperkins at gmail.com . Please also include a brief bio and any A/V requirements in your abstract. It is my favorite Percy novel. But I like it in companionship with The Last Gentleman. I think the whole Will Barrett arc is worth it and I?m a fan of LG?s final scene. Moviegoer did win the National Book Award, but it?s also the most read of Percy?s books. I might rather have Thanatos Syndrome paired with Love in the Ruins as the prescience shown in those novels makes them interesting to me. In the end though, I?m just incredibly pleased to have Percy?s work out out there. I don?t think anyone can go much wrong with any of them! They completely misunderstood the part about Naziism which was inserted because of an incident in Percy's own life. And they did not get his overall point. One woman did ask, "Just because we are able to do something, does that mean we should?" That was good. But Percy requires a good reader who is willing to be open to getting his humor and his overall assessments. And there are always those endings of his novels bringing us home if you are receptive.Janet Cantor On Monday, June 19, 2023, 08:30:19 PM EDT, RHONDA MCDONNELL wrote: I agree with Karey regarding The Second Coming.
