Philippians 4:19 ἐν δόξῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ

Post by Jonathan Robie »

Philippians 4:19 wrote:ὁ δὲ θεός μου πληρώσει πᾶσαν χρείαν ὑμῶν κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ ἐν δόξῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
How do you construe ἐν δόξῃ and ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ in this sentence?

Does τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ ἐν δόξῃ mean "his glorious riches"? Or should the phrase κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ ἐν δόξῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ be understood as "the riches of his glory in Jesus Christ?"

If you're asking about the placement of the αὐτοῦ whether it construes with the noun before or after it, my sense is that αὐτοῦ is pulled forward of the noun it modifies for prosodic reasons when it is relatively deaccented and the preceding word is in focus. In this case, κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος is probably not in focus, however, for it follows the verb and it is arthrous. Therefore, I would construe αὐτοῦ with πλοῦτος.

It makes sense that τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ should be construed together because the noun is definite, but I'm mostly asking which of these is the right way to construe it:
  • ὁ δὲ θεός μου πληρώσει πᾶσαν χρείαν ὑμῶν (κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ ἐν δόξῃ) ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
  • (ὁ δὲ θεός μου πληρώσει πᾶσαν χρείαν ὑμῶν κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ) ἐν δόξῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες καὶ διηποροῦντο, ἄλλος πρὸς ἄλλον λέγοντες, τί θέλει τοῦτο εἶναι;

I think it's best understood like this, where the full clause after κατὰ is treated as a clause of cause or attendant circumstance.
ὁ δὲ θεός μου πληρώσει πᾶσαν χρείαν ὑμῶν (κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ ἐν δόξῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ).
