Thunderbird Afloat
was shared by Tom Potwin, son of 45th veteran Edward Potwinr
of Woodstock, Vermont.
Edward Potwin was in the 19th Armored Infantry Battalion, 14th Armored Division. While on
occupation duty in Erden, Germamy, he was transferred to the
45th.
The 45th was to be redeployed to the Pacific and the war with
Japan. Members of the 45th with enough points were being
discharged. Those from other units without enough points such
as Edward Potwin were transferred to the 45th.
Rescuing Artifacts:
Tom Potwin rescued this artifact of his father's service
and the 45th by purchasing it on Ebay.
Too many such artifacts being
sold to private collectors and then become unavailable to
historians and family history researchers. Others are being
thrown away.
All such artifacts should be
donated to a public non-profit
library, archive, local or state historical society, or
similar institution
If for financial reasons they must be sold, digital images
should first be created to share with historians and families.
Thank you Tom Potwin for recognizing the significance of this
artifact to your father's history and the history of the 45th.
You have done a great service to the veterans of the 45th and
their families. You have set an example for others to follow.
