My sense is that when Jesus starts using the plural both of himself and when
addressing Nicodemus, he is not addressing Nicodemus as an individual but
rather is addressing "Jews" (in the distinctive Johannine sense), so that the
sense is of what "we in our party do" as opposed to what "you in your party"
