I just now saw this message as one awaiting approval to be forwarded to the
list; I see that it has already been forwarded to the list. Personally I
would like to have seen it re-phrased before coming to the list for the
reason that it focuses simultaneously on serious grammatical questions,
theological questions, and questions of sectarian beliefs--and we really
need to confine our discussion on this list strictly to matters of what the
grammar may legitimately support as meaning of the text in question.
I ask all participants in this discussion to be careful to hold comments
within the confines of grammatical focus--and this despite and because of
the fact that theological convictions are closely bound up with how the
text is understood; already the initial question and one response have
involved comments on the sectarian source of the argument in question. I am
hoping that the discussion will remain within the suggested guidelines and
in accordance with List Netiquette. Please do be careful: IF the thread
gets out of hand we shall not hesitate to terminate it.
