Without knowing what explanations you have found unsatisfactory, I'll
simply say that I've always assumed this means that Jesus engaged with the
legal scholars of the Torah over the meaning of the Law as one of their
peers. I'm assuming that the sorts of questions might have been the sort
one finds in the tractate Aboth in the Talmud.
