As of legal age to receive his bar mitzvah- Jesus was in the Temple
listening to the elders and asking and answering questions.  There is
nothing unusual about this at all.  It does not indicate that Jesus was
precocious or particularly learned.  He wasnt the first to engage in
chatechetical discussions with the Jerusalem priests nor the last.

Take a look at the film "Yentl" and you will get a good feel for the type of
discussion that was going on.
