Gospel of Peter 3.6

I have recently been working on the Gospel of Peter with some pg
students and we all struggled over the translation of the last
clause here, specifically how to translate the perfect participle of
EXW:

Gospel of Peter 3.6: hOI DE LABONTES TON KURION WQOUN AUTON
TREXONTES KAI ELEGON: SURWMEN TON hUION TOU QEOU ECOUSIAN AUTOU
ESXHKOTES.

I am inclined to take it as something like "having seized his
authority", but is there any precedent for translating ESXHKOTES this
way? M. R. James translates "now that we have gotten authority over
him". Does anyone have any suggestions? We chewed over this one
for some time.

Many thanks,

Mark
