Steven:

There’s really nothing like *A Comprehensive Grammar of the English
Language* by Randolph Quirk, et al. (Longman/Addison Wesley, 1985). What I
like is that it doesn’t tell you how to use the language; it tells you how
the language is used. One often hears that English is a simple, even
simplistic, language, but this book gives lie to that notion in most
fascinating detail--1800 pages’ worth. It’s expensive, $185, but it belongs
on the shelf next to your LSJM, BDAG, Smyth, and Robertson. It’s very
nicely bound, too.
