   The author of 1 Clement urges that "women show forth the gentleness of
their tongues through how they speak."  There's a textual variant on
"through how they speak" (DIA THS FWNHS), which reads instead "through
their silence" (DIA THS SIGHS).  Lightfoot prefers this reading; in fact
he restored it before there was MS evidence supporting it.  In his
(*very*) brief discussoin of it he quotes some kind of proverb:

    GUNAIXI KOSMON hH SIGH FEREI.

   He doesn't say where this is from.  Does anyone know?
