Some time ago list member Wieland Willker asked for a list of Greek idioms
which could be used for checking translations. I have been working on such a
list since his request. Following is my current list so far, which can also
be found at my webpage:
http://www.mcn.net/~wleman/ntidioms.htm
The following are literal English translations of the source Greek:
Mt 23:32 Fill up the measure of your fathers!
Mt 24:12 the love of many will cool
Mk 2:19 sons of the bridechamber
Lk 4:25 the heaven was shut for three and a half years
Lk 9:51 he resolutely set his face to go to Jerusalem
Lk 10:30 fell among robbers
Jn 1:16 grace upon grace
Jn 1:18 The only one, himself God, who is in the bosom of the Father, has
made him known.
Jn 2:4 what to me and to you? (Hebraism)
Acts 13:22 a man after my own heart
Rom 1:17 from faith to faith
Rom 12:20 you will heap burning coals on his head
2 Cor 3:18 from glory to glory
Eph 1:23 the fullness of him who fills all in all
1 Jn 1:6 live in the truth
[Note: the boundary between idioms and other figures of speech is not always
clearcut. See the (http://www.mcn.net/~wleman/ntfigures.htm) New Testament
figures of speech page for examples, some of which may act more as idioms.]
