You are correct that it "should be 'Il. 1.39'". All these abreviations
throw me.
Unfortunately the only further information I can provide is bibliographical:
Plate II, page X of the Pictoral Atlas to Homer (or Pictorial atlas to
Homer's Iliad and Odyssey), compiled by R. Engelman. It has pictures of
pottery and other types of paintings pertinent to the Iliad &
Odyssey. Available (to those among us who live in Melbourne) at the State
Library of Victoria. (see URL below)
I didn't copy down the date of the inscription, but would be happy to if
anyone is curious enough.
At risk of repeating myself, the thing that amazed me was that there is one
