Greetings Rick,
J.W. Wevers (Notes on the Greek Text of Genesis) discusses this but does
not really explain it. The difference is always 100 years. There are also
significant word order variations. Where a 100 years are added in one place
they are subtracted somewhere else to make the numbers add up correctly.
This isn't much help.
