You may permit me a rather characteristic comment on another way
to read the text:
the 'to himself' is part of an idiom that goes together with the verb
'to stand' and emphasizes the standing "for himself",
a kind of soft idiom 'he himself stood'.
This is a common idiom in Hebrew and the verb 'stand' fits with
Hebrew prayer, one of the most ancient of which is called,
of all things, 'the standing' ha-`amidah.
The Hebrew of this phrase, literary 1st century, ala Qumran:
vayya`amod lo
vayyitpallel ka'elle (or simply "lemor")
