two tunics

mark 6:9 admonishes the disciples not to *endushsthe duo chitwnas* on their
mission. this is usually understood to mean that they were to abandon
luxury and the symbols of wealth... etc.
what i am wondering is- is this a correct reading? is there something
significant about wearing (which is what the text literally says) two
tunics? did certain people dress in that way so that jesus wishes his
missionaries not to? they are not to carry the *phran*- i.e., the money bag
of the begging cynic-- so is the double tunic likewise some sort of
sociological marker?
thanks
jim
