Jonathan:
I've used the Summers grammar. And yes it will be of
use to you in your classes. Do keep in mind that
different teachers use different approaches to
teaching first year Greek material. And sometimes they
elect to introduce concepts at different times
depending on the book they may choose to use.
Personally, I think the best first year grammer is the
one by Machen. But I say that after having used the
Davis Grammar when I was an undergraduate. Either way,
I think I would have learned Greek. If you become
confused at terminology choices that you see are made
by the text your prof uses as opposed to Summers, I
would suggest that you just set Summers aside or only
occasionally refer to it for a point that may (or may
not) be clarified by so doing.
In a sentence, for first year, just stick with the
grammar your professor chooses for the class; use
other texts very discriminately.
