I did NOT say that and WOULDN'T have said that. What I said when I
suggested that we narrow the focus and keep the Greek text firmly in view,
it was in response to a hypothetical reconstruction of the context which
its author admitted off-list to me that he thought up as he was writing.
Ward's reconstruction is certainly much more carefully thought-out; all I
am saying is that it is indeed a reconstruction and necessarily involves
assumptions which cannot be demonstrated. I think it is quite likely that
there are direct citations from the Corinthian correspondence that are
being cited by Paul, such as PANTA EXESTIN. It may well be that 7:1 is such
a direct citation from the Corinthian correspondence, but whether or not it
is so is hardly a matter of absolute and apodictic demonstrability.
