B-greekers,
I would note here that there is ms variation for AP'. In fact, only one
of the 8 mss Prof. Marcus used (in the Loeb edition) has AP' -- P. Six, F
A M V W E, have EP' and one, L, has hUP'. For whatever reason, Prof.
Marcus chose to base his text on P alone which has AP'.
It is not my purpose here to determine which reading is the best, but
merely to point out that IF AP' is the origin of the other readings, the
scribes who introduced those readings interpreted AP' in the same way
that Carl and Prof. Marcus and others do and NOT as Jim does, i.e., AP' =
separation or away from. Marcus translates: "Salome, however, did not
choose to follow her country's law but acted **on her own authority** and
repudiated her marriage..."
I doubt anyone on this list knows Greek better than the scribes of
Josephus.
Yours in His grace,
