Dear Hefin,

I am not sure I follow you here. Are you suggesting that Sperber and Wilson's theory in general will help you understand this distinction? Or, are you referring to a specific discussion in their work? 

If the former, do you mean an understanding of the inferential nature of communication, implicature, principle(s) of relevance, etc. helps make this distinction clear? I can see this but I am not sure I would have thought of it without your suggestion and then thinking further about it.   

Or, if the latter, I cannot find a specific discussion in the book mentioned on the topic nor am I aware of any work by these authors (or any other proponent from their theory) addressing this issue. Are you thinking of a specific discussion?
