Could anyone help me understand the syntax behind this passage:
PRO TOU SE FILIPPON FWNHSAI ONTA UPO THN SUKHN EIDON SE.
What is the TOU doing there? It seems incredible that it would agree with
ONTA which appears to be part of the next clause. Can anyone help me on
this? What am I missing?
Hi Chris:
The main verb is EIDON. The preposition PRO introduces the articular
infinitive TOU ... FWNHSAI. TOU is in the genitive case because governed by
PRO. SE is the direct object of the infinitive, and FILIPPON is the
"subject." ONTA is a circumstantial participle modifying EIDON. So
(roughly), "Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I
saw you."
