[B-Greek] John 18.27

I had a friend ask me a question today about John 18.27: "and at once the
cock crowed" (KAI EUQEWS ALEKTWR EFWNHSEN). The materials he is using for a
Bible study say that this was not the actual crowing of a male fowl, but
that it was a military signal that the particular watch had ended.
I checked my lexicons (DBAG, ALGNT, Mounce, and my commentaries WBC,
Pillar, Westcott), and I could not find any evidence for such a suggestion.
Is there something in classical Greek that would support such a view, or is
this just someone's speculation?
