I'm not responding for Carlton but making the following remark:

Simply locate the deictic center and your problem is solved. If you look at 
temporal propositions only from the standpoint of the speaker or writer, all 
sorts of problems can arise. Look rather for the deictic center inside the 
temporally developed context, then make the temporal move backward (from the 
DC) with an Aorist.
