I assume any good commentary on James will address these issues,
including the ones Jonathan Robie asks about, but the intro to James in
THE EXPOSITOR'S GREEK TESTAMENT has a section on pertinent/relevant
Jewish doctrines in section IV (p. 408ff), and there is further
discussion in the actual commentary on the text. If you don't have time
to read a full-length commentary, this short commentary on James, while
dated, might address some of the questions/thoughts raised in this
discussion. For full-scale treatments, D.H. Carson recommends P.H.
Davids in NIGTC or NIBC; D. J. Moo in Pillar; and L. T. Johnson in his
Commentary Survey as "good value for the money."
