ISTM that the "they" in verse 2 are the inhabitants of Jerusalem, subsumed
under the name of their king Adonibezek. In English we often use a plural verb
with a collective singular noun: "this team are a good team". We also use
the plural pronoun "they" to mean singular "he/she", gender inclusive. Or
consider EFOBHQHSAN as a plural of majesty?
So read KAI EFOBHQHSAN ADWNIBEZEK [KAI hOI IEROSOLUMEITAI], KTL....
Compare Matthew 2:3, AKOUSAS DE hO BASILEUS hHRWiDHS ETARACQH *KAI PASAI
IEROSOUMA MET' AUTOU*.
