My first Greek teacher told us that a participle is so-called because it
"participates" in verb-y-ness and in adjective-y-ness at the same time.
Could that really be the correct explanation for the grammatical term?
The orginal poster (David) said that a participle is a verbal noun, which
is not correct. The mistake is understandable, though, since in Greek and
English, they can be used as nouns with no change in morphology.
insured (participle of "to insure")
An insured patient (as an adjective)
The insured make up 90% of the population ("insured" apparently used as a
N)
Yours,
Pat

An infinitive is a verbal noun and a participle is a
verbal adjective.
A participle is declinable and an infinitive is
indeclinable.
