I have always used syntax in the sense of denoting the
formal/physical structuring or relationships of words,
phrases, and clauses to the rest (other words,
phrases, and clauses) of the sentence. You can diagram
a sentence syntactically by physically connecting the
related structures. For example, do you connect a
prepositional phrase to a noun or verb? How do they
RELATE syntactically. I would probably not say that X
is an infinitive "syntactically speaking" but rather
"grammatically speaking." And I too find "verbal noun"
a good label for infinitives, but I was really asking
a somewhat grammatically picky question.
Thanks for all who replied.
