Yes, and this is one of those points which, in my opinion, ought to be
taught at the same time that comparison of adjectives and adverbs is
taught: in Attic dialect especially, but also continuing on into the Koine,
comparative adjectives show, in addition to forms based on -ION-
comparative infix a second comparative infix -IOS (related to that seen in
Latin comparative infix MF -ior (originally -ios) N -ius. In Greek there
are concomitant forms, some cases using only the -ION- infix, others more
commonly the -IOS- infix. MEIZWN/MEIZON derives from MEG-ION- and takes
these alternative forms
MF nom. sg. MEIZWN N nom./acc. sg. MEIZON
MFN gen. sg. MEIZONOS or MEIZOUS (<MEIZOS-OS with loss of -S- and contraction)
MFN dat. sg. MEIZONI
MF acc. sg. MEIZONA or MEIZW (<MEIZOS-A with loss of -S- and contraction)
MF nom. pl. MEIZONES or MEIZOUS (<MEIZOS-ES with loss of -S- and contraction)
N nom./acc. pl. MEIZW (<MEIZOS-A with loss of -S- and contraction)
MFN gen. pl. MEIZONWN
MFN dat.pl. MEIZOSI
MF acc. pl. MEIZONAS or MEIZOUS (like nom.)
