Raymond,
I'm afraid your observation has been made by more than a few of us. Like
the audio tape on the old Mission Impossible series, our books seem
programmed to self destruct after their initial use. Not in 30 seconds,
perhaps, but certainly long before we have finished with them. My first
grammar (Davis) lost its structural integrity sometime after the second
semester.
A handy, but not particularly scholarly, technique I use is duct tape.
Although not particularly attractive, it is cheap, and a great improvement
over the original binding - at least on Davis.
A fellow-sufferer,
Gene Baker
