Many take this PISTIS to refer to our personal trust in God, but that is not 
the only option.
I would suggest that this PISTIS is that which provides understanding PISTEI 
NOOUMEN (vs 3) concerning God's command. It is NOT our personal faith/belief 
that provides understanding. What is the basis of our understanding is God's 
revealed truth, his revealed word. ANd it is God's revealed word that we 
trust, not our faith. The examples of faith given in this chapter by and 
large show individuals who "took God as his word' and obeyed him. So, the 
faith that may very well be referred to here is the "collection of 
documents" that bring understanding of God's commands.

So, "Now, the faith (no article needed to make this definite) is the 
collection of documents (the teachings of scripture),  the documents that 
pertain to the things hoped for..." THese are the documents by which we gain 
understanding of God's word/commands.
