List-members may be interested to know that Indo-European etymological
dictionaries are accessible at the University of Leiden:
http://iiasnt.leidenuniv.nl/ied/index2.html
In particular, those working in ancient Greek may be glad to have Frisk's
Griechisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch accessible at (watch out for
word-wrap):
http://iiasnt.leidenuniv.nl/cgi-bin/startq.cgi?flags=endnnnl&root=leiden&basename=%5Cdata%5Cie%5Cfrisk
It should of course be remembered that, valuable as etymological derivation
may be for tracing backgrounds of word-meanings, any word's meaning in the
usage of a particular era need not bear any direct association with its
etymology.
