Dear Susan,
I was away for a bit and therefore missed your question (which I have
not seen answered in the pile of email that awaited me).
In Judith 13:19 the NRSV translator decided to read against the
critical (Hanhart = Rahlfs). As you note the critical text has H ELPIS.
A variant reading O EPAINOS is supported, however, by O (hexaplaric
recension = mss 58-583) La (Vetus Latina) Sy (Peshitta) Aeth videtur
(Ethiopic), = Vugate (LAUS) verse 25.
Since Rahlfs based his text chiefly on the great uncials (A B S) and
since none of these supports the variant, O EPAINOS did not come within
Rahlfs' purview.
