Hoi AIGUPTOI is the subject of the clause ORQWS
FRONEIN Hoi AIGUPTOI QHRIOIS EIKAZONTES KAI
BOSKHMSAI TO QEION and therefore should be in the
nominative. You are right that it is indirect
discourse
"For he (that one) said and taught that the Egyptians
did not correctly think by representing the Divine One
by images of beasts and cattle"
