Bill, it's not lost, just misplaced...  :)

I think wholehearted pursuit is the key.  That having been said, in addition to
the excellent advice already given, I suggest someone going at it alone to have
more than one beginning grammar.  Pick the one that seems to resonate the best
for your primary, but use all three, reading through the grammatical
explanations, and so forth.  Memorize everything, even the stuff they tell you
don't have to memorize, and you'll start getting ahead.  The big thing is to do
something on it KAQ' HMERAN...  :)
