I taught at a university (Washington University) that reuired such a
"candidate" term of university-level work before formally admitting a
student to a degree program. I can't attest how such a situation is handled
at other schools, but at WU successful work in a course taken during such a
"candidate" semester was applicable to a degree after admission was
formally granted. In such circumstances, the student in question might take
a Greek course at the level for which he seems qualified and, if successful
in it, have the credit for it applied toward a degree program. That might
be suggested in this student's case, but it's likely that different
universities will have different protocols for such not-very-common
situations.
