I think the observation of 5:18 is important.

To push it a little further, 5:16-26 is chiastic with 21b ("I warn
you...") being the center.  Thus we have:

16-17	The SARC vis-a-vis PNEUMA war.
	18	EI DE PNEUMATI AGESQE, OUK ESTE hUPO NOMON.
		19-21a	FANERA DE ESTIN TA ERGA THS SARKOS...
			21b  hA PROLEGW hUMIN KAQWS PROEIPON hOTI...
		22-23a	hO DE KARPOS TOU PNEUMATOS ESTIN...
	23b	KATA TWN TOIOUTWN OUK ESTIN NOMOS.
24-26	The CRISTOS has won the war between SARC and PNEUMA.

My point really is if you figure out vs 18 or 23b, then you've got a
good clue to the other one.  They both should "sync-up" with each other
in some way that makes sense within the literary context.
