No, not impossible. A number of us on this list have taught (collectively)
thousands of students to do just that--and most of our students are very
normal. There is no realistic way, given the structure of higher education,
to spend more than a year on such things. (Some schools manage to do it in
an intensive course of 2 or 3 mths. duration, but that's incredibly intense
and doesn't allow one to do much else at the same time.) Those studying on
their own can set their own pace, and those of you home schooling, can do
something similar, esp. if you're introducing classical languages in the
lower grades and have, say, 6-8 years over which to develop proficiency.
There used to be a programmed Greek course that might be adaptable, but it's
still secondary level (was from ACE or Alpha). For lower grade levels, I'd
think it must exist, though I've never seen such material (nor tried to
teach at that level). I hear of charter schools using a classical
curriculum, so they must have found something for Greek and Latin at that
level. But perhaps this is a publishing option for those with the necessary
background in *both* Greek *and* el-ed. (if you could find a publisher to go
for what most would perceive to be a small market).
A total immersion approach is ideal, but that simply doesn't fit into the
structure of traditional academic programs--and it's rather expensive to do
it otherwise. I don't know what became of it if anything), but Randall Buth
was talking about developing such a program several years ago. It would be
great for those with schedules flexible enough to take several months off
and do nothing else, and who could afford it, but that leaves most of us
out.
