[B-Greek] hUPOMONH in the Apocalypse

Harold,

As strange as it may seem, this response which doesn't appeal to other
texts or to grammar or a lexicon may be the best solution to this
conundrum I have seen yet. The problem I have been having is that the
text (which I will give in English to make it easier to type) doesn't
seem to follow logically

If anyone is to be taken captive,
to captivity he goes;
if one slays with the sword,
with the sword must he be slain.
This is the endurance and faith of the saints.

[RSV adapted]

My problem concerned how this necessity which is expressed in the first
part of the verse constitutes "endurance." I think I was falling into a
similar trap to those who translated it "Here is a call for the endurance
. . ." It is too easy to think of the word endurance as the verb "to
endure." If, however, one thinks of it as the ABILITY to withstand . .
.", then the consciousness that there is a divine providence behind all
that occurs would generate an ABILITY to withstand.

My apologies to Carl and to the group for a post really unrelated to
Greek itself, but this should wrap up the matter.

Thanks,
george
