For the u-umlaut, there were two categories of people:
A. all 4 worked
B. 1 & 2 worked; 3 & 4 gave garbage characters
For the Greek, there were three categories of people:
A1. 1 & 2 gave question marks; 3 & 4 worked fine
A2. 1 & 2 gave question marks; 3 worked fine; 4 had boxes for accented
characters
B. 1 & 2 gave question marks; 3 & 4 gave garbage characters
People in category A for the u-umlaut were in A1 or A2 for the Greek. People
in category B for the u-umlaut were in category B for the Greek.
The diagnosis:
A/A1 - everything is working as expected.
A/A2 - encoding-wise things are fine, you email software just isn't using a
Unicode font with polytonic Greek
B/B - your email software is incorrectly interpreting the character encoding
of UTF-8 mail as ISO-8859 (or similar)
If you fall into category B/B, let me know what email software you are using
and what operating system you run.
If your results don't fall into any of the categories, let me know too.
