- [B-Greek] AKOUW + gen/acc On Apr 21, 2005, at 4:33 PM, Beata Urbanek wrote: On Apr 21, 2005, at 2:54 PM, Beata Urbanek wrote: Dear B-Greekers, I'm trying to understand what other people (Wallace, Abbot, Thayer, Friberg) say on the subject and I/m getting more and more confused. Is there a difference in meaning between AKOUW with genetive and accusative? (The difference being between: hear/perceive and hearken/obey) Of special interest form me are phrases with FWNH and AUTOU. The difference is actually simple: AKOUW takes an accusative of the SOUND that is heard or a FACt that is learned by hearing but a genitive of the PERSON heard. Unfortunately, the usage of Koine writers doesn't completely conform to this rule. You'd do best to consult a lexicon such as BDAG or LSJ to get some sense of what is most common usage and what is more exceptional. Thanks. But what about FWNH? Why does it take genetive? And what about hearing and listening distinction? I suppose thare is no (strict) rule, am I right? Sorry, that I'm asking again but I don't have access to any other books where I live. Well, if it does no more than confirm what I told you about inconsistent usage, I just did a search of AKOUW followed within 5 words by FWNHN and found 30 instances; searching for AKOUW followed within 5 words by FWNHS I found 11 instances. I think that in older Attic FWNHN would have been more widely used. Carl W.
