Let me give my own experience here. When I first took New Testament
Greek, I memorized a basic vocabulary of 2,000 words. With that the
dictionary at the end of my Greek New Testament was sufficient for my
use. When I started translating from the Septuagint and other texts
related to New Testament studies, I was frustrated by my lack of
vocabulary. I found it helpful to use a diglot while building my
vocabulary. I found lugging a five pound lexicon around was a bit
awkward for regular use. But I read from the Greek as much as possible
and when I came across unfamiliar vocabulary I wrote down the new words
and committed them to memory.
Of course, it also helped to study some decent books on Attic Greek.
Sincerely,
Michael Abernathy
