Sir William Ramsay suggests that it comes from the
Lydian word _theira_ meaning "town" so that Thyrateira
meant "town of Thya" (Historical Geography of Asia
Minor, p 114) Colin Hemer seems to concur in his work
The Letters to the Seven Churches of Asia Minor
