The difference is actually simple: AKOUW takes an accusative of the
SOUND that is heard or a FACt that is learned by hearing but a genitive
of the PERSON heard. Unfortunately, the usage of Koine writers doesn't
completely conform to this rule. You'd do best to consult a lexicon
such as BDAG or LSJ to get some sense of what is most common usage and
what is more exceptional.
