The preposition plus dative here signifies a location but not a physical
location. There is an extended metaphor in Jn 15:1-8 where the dative is
used in a similar way. Observe how the dative is used in:

John 15:2 PAN KLHMA EN EMOI

John 15:4 MEINATE EN EMOI, KAGW EN hUMIN. KAQWS TO KLHMA OU DUNATAI KARPON
FEREIN AF' hEAUTOU EAN MH MENHi EN THi AMPELWi, hOUTWS OUDE hUMEIS EAN MH EN
EMOI MENHTE.

John 15:5 hO MENWN EN EMOI

John 15:6 EAN MH TIS MENHi EN EMOI

John 15:7 EAN MEINHTE EN EMOI KAI TA hRHMATA MOU EN hUMIN MEINHi
