with the hired servants they went
OPISW AUTOU
after him
The succession of this term in the narrative seems to
illustrate that Peter and Andrew were called to OPISW
sometimes translated as Come after thier response
was to only follow. James and John on the other hand,
were merely called without any command command and
they OPISW came after Jesus. The significance for
the Markan narrative of the term OPISW come after is
heightened by Mark 8:31-35. Where Peter is again
directed to OPISW come after. Following the
confrontation between Jesus and Peter there is an
important saying revolving around the word OPISW. In
support of the narrators intention to make the point
is the fact that he presents James and John as persons
who will drink the same cup and be baptized with the
same Baptism as Jesus. The theme behind OPISW "coming
after" is suffering. Just as Jesus came after John who
suffered and died, Jesus will also suffer and died.
John is the first pattern of suffering and death in
Marks narrative. Jesus implies that to OPISW requires
suffering and even death. The teaching that follows
the cursing of Peter as Satan clarifies the path of
disicipleship to Jesu disciples and followers and at
the very heart of the discourse is the word OPISW.
This Discourse stands in direct contrast to the course
that Peter will choose to take in following Jesus.
Just as the true face of the Actor lies behind the
PROSWPOU - the true character of discipleship is
OPISW. To come behind in genuine immatation of
character, character that is willing to suffer for the
sake of Jesus and the Gospel. Here is Mark's
persentation of the teaching from Jesus.
