John 7:15 re GRAMMATA
GS:
Are you referring to a Kabbalistic interpretation?
DG: Yes, I guess that's what I am referring to.
Considering how the greek text in all the gospels, epistles, and revelation
are profusely laced with metaphor I think one would be remiss not to
consider wordplay when one is doing a translation of any verse or pericope.
GS: If so, this would be the only intimation of such.
I seriously doubt that to be the case.Nothing else in the text supports it.
I think we should stick to understanding what the text fairly plainly says
rather than looking for hidden meanings -- after all, understanding the
meaning of the text is the raison d'etre of this list.
DG: I think the greek text of the gospels (and especially revelation) are
overflowing with wordplay and hidden meanings.
I see it in almost every single verse I look at.
The church father Origen was a huge proponent of allegory and metaphor (he
even got excommunicated for it)
In my opinion, translating a gospel verse as if it was a newspaper report of
an historical event is an unwarranted fundamentalist approach to scripture.

PS to Dr Conrad - sorry about not recopying all the greek text in this post
re grammata. Since my previous posts are only hours old the other members
should have no problem following the thread. I think the issue of wordplay
and hidden meaning in the greek text of the NT is a very important and
neglected area of research. I am doing a lot of work on this topic and will
confine my posts to what the greek text actually says. I know many of you
may think my posts may seem a bit outlandish (as different ways of looking
at something often do) but sometimes I just have to take the risk of looking
like a fool to get feedback I can use in my thesis. Please have patience.
