Hello, all. I am new to this group, and I thought I would introduce myself.
Although this is a highly focused group, with little personal chit chat,
I think an introduction may be in order before I start posting.
I am a priest who has made it to his fifth decade, through seminary, and
through several years of ministry, with only a smattering of Greek. So I
am studying on my own using these books:
Dobson, _Learn New Testament Greek_
Wenham, _The Elements of New Testament Greek_
Sidgwick, _First Greek Writer_
I seem to do best if I use several sources, especially if those sources take
different approaches.
My goal is to be able to read the New Testament in Greek with no need for
a translation, except as a pony for a while. Then I want to be able to read
the Septuagint the same way. I hope to master the language. I tend to be
good at general comprehension, but not so good at the nuts and bolts. In
Latin I could always tell you what a passage meant, but if you asked me exactly
how it meant that, I would mumble and sputter. (My Latin has rusted over
the years, I am afraid.) I want to know Greek so well I know exactly what
the author is saying and exactly how he is saying it. That is why I am spending
so much time with composition. I figure if I can work it both directions
I will really know the stuff.
I have some questions I might later put before the group, but not now. I
appreciate the learning I have seen here over the last several weeks. Most
of it has been over my head! But I think I am becomiing confirmed in the
Buthian pronunciation (can I claim credit for having coined the term?)
sincerely,
Sean A. Lotz+
