Acts 15:38 PAULOS DE HXIOU, TON APOSTANTA AP' AUTWN APO PAMFULIAS KAI
MH SUNELQONTA AUTOIS EIS TO ERGON MH SUMPARALAMBANEIN TOUTON.
Culy & Parsons (Acts Handbook, Baylor 2004) give three options in
thier analysis of SUMPARALAMBANEIN.
1- complement of HXIOU
2- direct object of HXIOU
3- introducing indirect discourse with a verb of cognition
I find this somewhat mystifying. First of all they way I define
complement option 2 is a restricted form of option 1. But according
to David Crystall (Dict. of linguistics) complement is sometimes used
in a restricted sense which would exclude direct objects.
Option number 3 is strange. Where is the indirect discourse? Perhaps
TOUTON pointing back to TON APOSTANTA AP' AUTWN APO PAMFULIAS KAI MH
SUNELQONTA AUTOIS EIS TO ERGON could be considered indirect discourse.
A further problem I have with their logic is that all three options
could be true. I don't see these as mutually exclusive alternatives,
unless you use the restricted sense of complement and even then
option 3 doesn't seem to rule out options 1 or 2.
