Barrett (Acts ICC p.768) suggests that the sequence of events in Acts
16:6-7 is the same as the sequence of the participles and finite
verbs. He claims that Luke alternated finite verbs with participles
to break up the monotony in long sentences. Thus DIHLQON DE THN
FRUGIAN KAI GALATIKHN CWRAN takes place before KWLUQENTES hUPO TOU
hAGIOU PNEUMATOS LALHSAI ... . He notes that the normal syntax of
the aorist participle would reverse this order and that the Byzantine
Text reads DIELQONTES for DIHLQON and would permit the alternative
order.

The notion that finite verbs can be alternated with participles for
reasons other than syntax, what about this, can we tolerate this sort
of looseness in Luke's narrative?
