Perhaps you failed to notice that the thread on Jn 1.18 has been closed. I have therefore changed the header and am dealing only with the question of PROTOTOKOS (and to some extent other combinations with PROTO-).
PROTOTOKOS does not necessarily mean "first-born." Some of these combinations with PROTO- have the sense of "foremost." In LSJ under PROTOGONOS Sophocles' _Philoctetes_ 180 is cited for the sense "high-born houses" (or it could be "foremost families").
