[B-Greek] visual aids for Greek pronunciation

This makes since for those without hearing impairments as well. Some new
voice recognition technologies are using mouth mappings to increase their
level of accuracy. I have seen experiments where a recording of a word was
used as the soundtrack for a video of a person saying a different word. The
visual data often changed the qualia (sound which the viewer/listener
heard).

The upshot is that we watch each others' mouths in order to "hear"
precisely.

I don't know of any web sites with this, but I doubt it will be long before
they are produced.

Blessings,
John Schwandt

Subject: [B-Greek] visual aids for Greek pronunciation

I teach NT Greek online as well as introducing students in online
Bible courses to a little bit of Greek and/or Hebrew as appropriate
to the course. I use audio CDs that I record myself to teach the
Erasmian pronunciation to teach the alphabet and offer words, phrases
and eventually whole biblical passages for students to read along and
practice "sounding out."

One of my students just posted this comment in our online "Language
Lab" discussion:

"I am enjoying your approach and CD, however, I wish I could watch
your face as the various words are being pronounced. I often have a
hard time "hearing" the CD, especially the full selection reading
sessions. The old adage is very true for me, "Its, Greek to me." HA!
Please, this is no fault of you or the program; only my problem due
to partial hearing loss and "stubbornness to succumb" to a hearing
aid, I guess?"

Is anyone aware of a web page, textbook, or other resource that might
have facial illustrations of at least the alphabet and some sample
words being pronounced? Or video that can be downloaded? This
particular student connects to the internet via a dialup line, so
streaming video wouldn't be an option.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated. I hadn't considered the
diminished usefulness of audio recordings for hearing-impaired students.

Thanks!

Susan Jeffers
